The Painting Movie Review:
Creative, colorful, and unexpectedly wise, "The Painting" is the latest offshore animation to show to kids burned out on computer-generated Hollywood toons. Ty Burr-Boston Globe While the artist-as-deity concept was flattering enough to get "The Painting" nominated for a 2012 Cesar Award, its big ideas about equality and friendship are flatly 2-D. Amy Nicholson-Los Angeles Times Lovely but lifeless 'toon is none too subtle in delivering its multicultural moral. John DeFore-Hollywood Reporter Short on narrative sophistication but visually a true objet d'art. Anita Gates-New York Times Helmer Jean-Francois Laguionie's consistently enjoyable, inventive and beautifully crafted tale is a color riot suitable for all ages. Boyd van Hoeij-Variety May enthrall precocious kids as well as fine-arts-oriented adults - otherwise no big deal. Kelly Vance-East Bay Express It's a wonderful, imaginative, one-of-kind experience. Austin Kennedy-Film Geek Central It's sophisticated and stunning, amusing and harrowing, and quite possibly one of the most interesting pictures of the year, raising the bar for CG-animated pursuits. Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com Dreary animated civics lesson with even drearier imagery. David Noh-Film Journal International The film's aesthetic employs expressionism, realism, and cubism, but the morality plays are layered on as thickly and haphazardly as a toddler's finger painting. Caroline McKenzie-Slant Magazine Inventive, fanciful, and decidedly UN Disney. Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service A marvellous French animation unafraid of broaching big ideas with a potentially pre-teen audience. Tom Clift-Moviedex ...an imaginative parable to teach children about creationism as well as racism, colonialism and many other human evils, framed in a manner that adults will appreciate too. Laura Clifford-Reeling Reviews Adults will be charmed as much as kids, and the film's depiction of Venice, awash in orange and yellows, almost rivals the real thing. Kent Turner-Film-Forward.com
