In Time Movie Review: | |
In Time is so crammed with provocative ideas it begins to feel over-crowded. David Thomson-The New Republic Niccol's 'In Time': Prescient allegory of urgent timeliness about the current economic woes. Joe Baltake-Passionate Moviegoer Clever and unsettling. Andrea Gronvall-Chicago Reader Niccol's major problem is timing: action sequences and dialogue scenes lie flat on the screen, while his tendency to play around with pacing means that any tension quickly dissipates. Life's too short. Tom Huddleston-Time Out The film is beautifully shot in chilly blues and grays by cinematographer Roger Deakins, and Los Angeles locales are well chosen for futuristic effect. Most of the time, however, I found myself glancing at the clock on my own wrist. Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor Niccol's zippy direction, joined to a sleek, rich production design, keeps the movie spinning like a shiny toy. Bruce Diones-New Yorker Don't let the ads fool you: It has a lot on its mind. Will Leitch-Deadspin One long, extended chase sequence interspersed with awkward flirting. Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground Even with its thoughtful nods to "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Les Miserables," "In time" never delivers that transcendent "Blade Runner" moment, and never rises above cult classic to simple classic. Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service There's a lot to like about In Time, but it misses the mark for being an overly memorable experience and ends up being just an adequate sci-fi flick. Benjo Colautti-We Got This Covered "In Time" gets points for putting forth an interesting concept, but because of Niccol's inability to utilize that concept, we get a film that ends up going nowhere. Jeff Beck-Examiner.com Worry, worry and watch the clock, for 'In Time' wastes what time you've got. Betty Jo Tucker-ReelTalk Movie Reviews Andrew Niccol's dystopia never really feels like anything other than a depthless, stylish sleek surface. Ian Berriman-SFX Magazine Starts out great, almost like a pseudo sequel to Niccol's other sci-fi drama Gattaca, but slowly unravels into a mindless chase picture that never really captures any real depth or meaning. R. L. Shaffer-IGN DVD Nothing remarkable about this futuristic adventure that reminds me a bit of "Logan's Run." Paul Chambers, CNN. Paul Chambers-CNNRadio Andrew Niccol continues to be the go-to guy for using smartly executed science-fiction/fantasy concepts in the service of expressing ideas rather than bang-up action. Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com The movie doesn't ask much of them, acting-wise, as it devolves into a chase film and doesn't spent any time examining all the thorny moral quandaries that it brings up. Eric Melin-Scene-Stealers.com Prophetically arriving at about the same time as the Occupy Wall Street protests, the film couldn't be more relevant; unfortunately, it's also ham-handed. John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) h skhnothetikh akribeia kai oi sygkrathmenes aisthhtikes pinelies me tis opoies employtizei ayto poy exei apofasisei na kanei, de se afhnoyn na peis thn tainia toy Niccol xasimo xronoy akribws, alla oyte kai gia quality time mporeis na thn peraseis Joseph Proimakis-Movies for the Masses Timberlake's charisma can't carry this but it's hard to think of anyone who could. Steve Newall-Flicks.co.nz Like a 99 Percenter in the making, Will is stunned to hear from Henry that -- oh my god! -- the system of doling out time is rigged. Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters Nobody should waste a minute of their life on this baloney. Kelly Vance-East Bay Express Niccol's metaphor gets silly fast. Peter Keough-Boston Phoenix This Bonnie and Clyde couldn't have less on screen chemistry if Clyde was the orangutan from Every Which Way but Loose. Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Waste Land Movie Review:
I do not mean to make their lives seem easy or pleasant. It is miserable work, even after they grow accustomed to the smell. But it is useful work, and I have been thinking much about the happiness to be found by work that is honest and valuable. Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times It shows us how artists find ideas and concepts for their work from the most unlikely sources, and it demonstrates the power of art to spark curiosity and cultural awareness in even the poorest, most underprivileged people. Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald While we await the definitive documentary about the glut of garbage, "Waste Land" reduces this global catastrophe to touchingly human scale. Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch It's sheer pleasure watching Muniz work -- seeing him seized by mad impulses of delight. Stephen Cole-Globe and Mail "Waste Land" is a testament that things can go from good to bad in an instant. But they can also improve just as quickly. Stephanie Merry-Washington Post It's not a very good title, Waste Land - this isn't a bleak film, at all - but just about everything else in Lucy Walker's documentary works, and illuminates. Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer This conversion of garbage into humanitarian aid is just the beginning. Practical charity gives way to life-changing intimacy. Jeffrey Overstreet-Image The breadth of gratitude these catadores feel towards Muniz and the life-experience they undertake makes for an intelligent, emotional movie. Simon Foster-sbs.com.au Waste Land is a real treasure, the sort of heartwarming and life affirming study of people, lacking in both sentimentality and cynicism, that uplifts the audience and elevates the art form Dan Jardine-Cinemania Waste Land fuses the design concepts behind two of the most high-profile animations of recent years, Rio and the Oscar-winning Wall-E, into an essay about how hard some people are prepared to work. Graham Young-Birmingham Post The result is a film that works on multiple levels, casting light on a worldwide problem while delivering a big jolt of human hope. Robert W. Butler-Kansas City Star Muniz is a gifted, modest and altogether delightful man, and his project is both aesthetically fascinating and philosophically stimulating. Philip French-Guardian [UK] It's inspiring, humbling and beautifully made. Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express A well-made and often uplifting film that refuses to get angry yet still manages to point out that things aren't as they should be for a great many. Derek Malcolm-This is London More self-conscious, subtle exploration than the dubious bleeding-heart PR stunt implied by its premise. Sophie Ivan-Film4 Well made and impressively structured, this is a heartwarming, genuinely inspirational and ultimately deeply moving film that has deservedly picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. Matthew Turner-ViewLondon The glimpses of favela life will make you thank your lucky stars you weren't born there. Anthony Quinn-Independent Perhaps not life-changing but certainly life-affirming. Jason Goodyer-Little White Lies This is undoubtedly a bold raid into an unknown territory - both geographic and conceptual - that the prosperous classes prefer not to think about. Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK] Walker finds inspiration and strange beauty in the squalor. Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph As in her memorable Blindsight, in which sightless climbers took on Everest, Walker celebrates the indomitability of the human spirit. Nigel Andrews-Financial Times A remarkable testament to working class lives and the unifying power of art, Waste Land is a rare thing - a film that makes you proud to be human. Elliott Noble-Sky Movies Compelling and vivid, it's another fine piece of work from an up-and-coming talent. Nev Pierce-Empire Magazine A reminder of humanity's ability to transcend its surroundings through art or just plain optimism. Matt Glasby-Total Film Walker's documentary is moving, life-affirming and challenges what you think you might know about these people who pick through the rubbish. Amber Wilkinson-Eye for Film

Frankenstein's Army Movie Review:
You've seen found footage horror and Nazi zombies before, but Frankenstein's Army mashes them together in a way that breathes new life into tired genre conventions. Henry Northmore-The List Like the monster evoked by the film's title, everything feels tacked together. Amber Wilkinson-Eye for Film Where Frankenstein's Army really shines is with the stunning designs and monster make-up, with the film delivering old-style lumbering monsters without resorting to CGI. Invincible Movie Review:
There's a sugar coating to the way Papale's story unfolds, but not so much that you'll spoil your dinner. Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune Even Papale's most famous play, recovering a fumble to set up a touchdown, is embellished, as if Disney can't bear to stick with the facts. Bill Muller-Arizona Republic When it's good it's very good. When it's bad -- well, it's still pretty good. Joanne Kaufman-Wall Street Journal Invincible is a working-class jock Cinderella fantasy with the sincerity of a beer commercial, the soul of a Republican incumbent, and the designer-flannel esthetics of an old Bruce Springsteen video. Geoff Pevere-Toronto Star It may not break new ground, but Invincible is an entertaining film, awash in clichés but leavened by the charismatic performance of Mark Wahlberg as Vince Papale. Claudia Puig-USA Today What's modestly refreshing about the way this story is told by director Eric Core and writer Brad Gann, is that the person with the largest doubts about going pro is Papele himself. Richard Schickel-TIME Magazine Inspiring sports-underdog story for tweens and up. Jane Boursaw-Common Sense Media Mark Whalberg is surprisingly good, delivering a likeness to the real Vince Papale that is uncanny. Neil Miller-Film School Rejects It may seem that Invincible takes too long to get to the football. But by the time it does get down to it, we've invested enough in Wahlberg and Kinnear to give a damn about the outcome of the all-important Big Game. Gary Dowell-Baltimore City Paper I wonder how many more of these inspirational sports films we have to sit through in 2006. Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed Screenwriter Brad Gann shares the guilt for this predictable cinematic travesty along with composer Mark Isham whose bombastic musical score is akin to hammering a nail with a shotgun blast. Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com Invincible is the story of Vince Papale, who was an actual figure -- a part-time bartender who went to a tryout, survived training camp, made the Eagles team, and became a Philadelphia legend. Tony Macklin-tonymacklin.net ricson (who doubles as cinematographer) has a good feel for urban grit and blue-collar dreams, and he gets good, unpretentious performances-especially from Wahlberg, who provides the movie's solid, dependable center. Jim Lane-Sacramento News & Review The script by newcomer Brad Gann hits all the right notes. Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound Though familiar and cliched, Invincible succeeds in spite of itself because it is so technically well done and full of heart. Felix Gonzalez Jr.-DVD Review Mating calls aside, the paint-by-numbers sports side of this picture is only likely to capture the imagination of kids under the age of ten. Kam Williams-BlackFilm.com As far as sports films go, Invincible doesn't offer anything original or notable ... except Mark Wahlberg's performance. Jette Kernion-Cinematical ...Greg Kinnear is particularly engaging as Papale's coach... David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews Invincible is a Walter Mitty tale, but a true one, a fantasy come to life. John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis A film lacking Herzog's USP -- an ironic and regressive sense of the irreducible power of images -- 'Invincible' feels as though it has been devised by a scholar steeped in Herzog lore, but who at some crucial early stage mistook him for Istvan Szabo. -Sight and Sound This 'chump-to-champ' story adheres to the 'Three R' formula: Part 'Rudy,' part 'Rocky,' with a dash of 'The Rookie' tossed in for good measure. Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah) If Vince Papale was the heart and soul of Philadelphia during the mid-1970s, Wahlberg brings those same qualities to "Invincible," a movie served considerably by them. Christopher Smith-Bangor Daily News (Maine) The latest in Disney's line of films about real-life sports figures never settles for easy answers. Daniel Eagan-Film Journal International Weak on acting power, strong on cinematography and heart. Ross Anthony-Hollywood Report Card Out of work schoolteacher and part-time bartender, Philadelphia Eagles football fan Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg) had nothing to lose when new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) held an open tryout. With sheer determination and stamina, Papale made the team Roger Tennis-Cinemaclips.com

The film's sense of conviction and psychological nuance never rises above that of the "I Learned It from Watching You" anti-drug PSA. Ed Gonzalez-Slant Magazine What the production aims to pull off with the picture in the early going isn't where the movie ends up, torching a promising premise on tiresome storytelling and a mangled tonal balance. Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com Under The Bed offers a fresh take on the fabled boogeyman story, delivering an entertaining explanation of what exactly is going "bump in the night" - along with one hell of a horror finale. One wishes it had spared us the remedial theorizing on media culture and artistic representation and license and less apologetically acted the part of a straight-up horror film. Grabbers Movie Review:
A polished, watchable genre entertainment that nonetheless lacks the inspired dialogue and situations needed to make a memorable impression. Dennis Harvey-Variety For a horror comedy it needed some comedy and some horror. Nigel Andrews-Financial Times This is not quite a horror version of Whisky Galore but there are reminders of Ealing's comic élan. Derek Malcolm-This is London This ambitious mix of mirth and menace is an offbeat and hugely enjoyable affair. Alan Jones-Radio Times It's perfect for after the pub and while it never hits the heights of say, Tremors, with the right group of mates this should be a lot of fun. Alex Zane-Sun Online A likable and technically impressive comedy-horror. Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK] Grabbers doesn't reinvent the horror wheel, but it rises above such quibbles with lovely coastal charm and lots of feck-fuelled laughs. Stephen Carty-Empire Magazine Disappointingly, Grabbers is short on shlock and it's not very funny. -Sky Movies A hugely enjoyable, frequently funny creature feature that plays like an Irish version of Tremors ... Matthew Turner-ViewLondon This Irish/British horror-comedy deals with menacing tentacles of an extraterrestrial kind, with an inspired premise, appealing cast and mix of laughs and thrills ensuring it's destined for cult status. Ben Rawson-Jones-Digital Spy A bit hit and miss, but Richard Coyle leads a game cast. -Scotsman A near-irresistible Friday-night-out monster picture in the tradition of Lake Placid or Tremors, with a boozy Irish charm that makes it a distinctive addition to the catalogue of alien invasions. Kim Newman-Empire Magazine Grabbers will delight not only the fans of the genre but also anyone who wants to spend 94 minutes in the company of some charming and bumbling characters ... Evrim Ersoy-Electric Sheep Wright doesn't take the time to create any real tension, which means that the comedy relief doesn't have a chance of raising laughs. Eddie Harrison-The List A bright, breezy Irish monster mash boasting gorgeous cinematography, appealing performances and great SFX, even if it's a little slight for can't-miss status. Matt Glasby-Total Film an Irish tentacular Tremors - an icky creature feature with the emphasis on comedy and character, ending (not unlike Shaun of the Dead) in a riotous pub booze-up, with human romance amidst all the extra-terrestrial reproduction. Anton Bitel-Little White Lies Topping the list of great movie drunks is the rubbered Ruth Bradley whose legless performance as teetotal Garda Nolan, getting drunk as a skunk, is paralytic perfection. Brian Henry Martin-UTV One of those rare horror films with an unimprovable premise: its pack of blood-sucking aliens are fatally allergic to human blood that contains a significant percentage of alcohol. Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph An group of Irish villagers have to stay drunk to keep alcohol-fearing alien monsters at bay. Yup. Scott Weinberg-FEARnet

Broken Movie Review: | |
Norris works hard to inject some joy and wonder into what could easily be a much more dark and miserable experience. Dave Calhoun-Time Out Norris' film does find a beating heart, if not exactly a focus, in the tender father-daughter relationship between Archie and Skunk, nicely underplayed by Roth and Laurence. Charles Gant-Variety The film is rich in poignant moments and negotiates its frequent shifts from violence to gentleness to sorrow with sensitivity. David Rooney-Hollywood Reporter It's the rare coming-of-age narrative that manages to respect the tricky ambiguities of shifting perceptions. Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine Attention: Book Discussion Groups. Have I got a book for you. And a movie beautifully adapted from it. Both are titled Broken. Tony Macklin-tonymacklin.net A moving and thoughtful cinema experience. Thomas Caldwell-Cinema Autopsy It is a sad viewing experience, but never a pessimistic one. Skunk's world is full of love; whatever fractured form it may take, Broken always returns to that enriching notion. Simon Foster-sbs.com.au Taut, engrossing domestic tale [that] takes place in a cul-de-sac where a violent neighbour-on-neighbour attack provides the springboard for a strong story about secrets, lies and unravelling lives. Jim Schembri-3AW Amounts to a contrived, feel-bad suburban melodrama where a series of head-slapping misunderstandings lead to everyone being as miserable as possible. Aaron Yap-Flicks.co.nz A moving and visually beautiful story of an eleven-year old girl who is increasingly drawn into the complicated and cruel world of the everyday English suburbs. Simon Weaving-Screenwize The adaptation from the novel is excellent, a fine example of how character and place can be sculpted from prose Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile Acclaimed theatre director Rufus Norris has taken the various story strands of Mark O'Rowe's proficient adaptation of Daniel Clay's novel and plaited them into an emotional tour de force Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile Broken takes a toxic suburbia and tenderly examines the fallout. Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show The final suggestion that people on medication are just a mood-swing from being a danger to the community consigns Norris's dull-looking film to the lowest echelons of stigmatizing thought. Eddie Harrison-The List Erupts into unpersuasive, blood-drenched melodrama that is no doubt intended as a wake-up call to a troubled country. Philip French-Observer [UK] Even the presence of Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Denis Lawson can't sell us on scenarios that make The Jeremy Kyle Show look restrained. Alistair Harkness-Scotsman Laurence in particular is dynamic as Norris's young muse, a guileless screen presence who effortlessly charms us back to childhood. Damon Wise-Radio Times It presents a portrait of British life that may indeed make you wonder about the origins of the 2011 riots, but also misses as many targets as it hits. Derek Malcolm-This is London While this strikingly well-made film is a great calling card for rising-star filmmaker Norris, it's also so relentlessly dark and unsettling that it's difficult to see the point of it all. Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com Roth is charming and Laurence is an intriguing young talent to watch, but Broken is a shaggy dog story wallowing in emotions that it seldom earns. Emma Dibdin-Digital Spy As is so often the case with gritty British realism, it sacrifices the realism for extra piles of grit. Grant Rollings-Sun Online Mainly worth seeing for a sparky performance by Eloise Laurence, whose cheeky smile lights up the surrounding miserabilism. Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK] The cast are terrific - including Cillian Murphy as a sympathetic teacher - but it's a tough watch. Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express
