In Time Movie Review: | |
In Time is so crammed with provocative ideas it begins to feel over-crowded. David Thomson-The New Republic Niccol's 'In Time': Prescient allegory of urgent timeliness about the current economic woes. Joe Baltake-Passionate Moviegoer Clever and unsettling. Andrea Gronvall-Chicago Reader Niccol's major problem is timing: action sequences and dialogue scenes lie flat on the screen, while his tendency to play around with pacing means that any tension quickly dissipates. Life's too short. Tom Huddleston-Time Out The film is beautifully shot in chilly blues and grays by cinematographer Roger Deakins, and Los Angeles locales are well chosen for futuristic effect. Most of the time, however, I found myself glancing at the clock on my own wrist. Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor Niccol's zippy direction, joined to a sleek, rich production design, keeps the movie spinning like a shiny toy. Bruce Diones-New Yorker Don't let the ads fool you: It has a lot on its mind. Will Leitch-Deadspin One long, extended chase sequence interspersed with awkward flirting. Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground Even with its thoughtful nods to "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Les Miserables," "In time" never delivers that transcendent "Blade Runner" moment, and never rises above cult classic to simple classic. Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service There's a lot to like about In Time, but it misses the mark for being an overly memorable experience and ends up being just an adequate sci-fi flick. Benjo Colautti-We Got This Covered "In Time" gets points for putting forth an interesting concept, but because of Niccol's inability to utilize that concept, we get a film that ends up going nowhere. Jeff Beck-Examiner.com Worry, worry and watch the clock, for 'In Time' wastes what time you've got. Betty Jo Tucker-ReelTalk Movie Reviews Andrew Niccol's dystopia never really feels like anything other than a depthless, stylish sleek surface. Ian Berriman-SFX Magazine Starts out great, almost like a pseudo sequel to Niccol's other sci-fi drama Gattaca, but slowly unravels into a mindless chase picture that never really captures any real depth or meaning. R. L. Shaffer-IGN DVD Nothing remarkable about this futuristic adventure that reminds me a bit of "Logan's Run." Paul Chambers, CNN. Paul Chambers-CNNRadio Andrew Niccol continues to be the go-to guy for using smartly executed science-fiction/fantasy concepts in the service of expressing ideas rather than bang-up action. Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com The movie doesn't ask much of them, acting-wise, as it devolves into a chase film and doesn't spent any time examining all the thorny moral quandaries that it brings up. Eric Melin-Scene-Stealers.com Prophetically arriving at about the same time as the Occupy Wall Street protests, the film couldn't be more relevant; unfortunately, it's also ham-handed. John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) h skhnothetikh akribeia kai oi sygkrathmenes aisthhtikes pinelies me tis opoies employtizei ayto poy exei apofasisei na kanei, de se afhnoyn na peis thn tainia toy Niccol xasimo xronoy akribws, alla oyte kai gia quality time mporeis na thn peraseis Joseph Proimakis-Movies for the Masses Timberlake's charisma can't carry this but it's hard to think of anyone who could. Steve Newall-Flicks.co.nz Like a 99 Percenter in the making, Will is stunned to hear from Henry that -- oh my god! -- the system of doling out time is rigged. Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters Nobody should waste a minute of their life on this baloney. Kelly Vance-East Bay Express Niccol's metaphor gets silly fast. Peter Keough-Boston Phoenix This Bonnie and Clyde couldn't have less on screen chemistry if Clyde was the orangutan from Every Which Way but Loose. Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Waste Land Movie Review:
I do not mean to make their lives seem easy or pleasant. It is miserable work, even after they grow accustomed to the smell. But it is useful work, and I have been thinking much about the happiness to be found by work that is honest and valuable. Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times It shows us how artists find ideas and concepts for their work from the most unlikely sources, and it demonstrates the power of art to spark curiosity and cultural awareness in even the poorest, most underprivileged people. Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald While we await the definitive documentary about the glut of garbage, "Waste Land" reduces this global catastrophe to touchingly human scale. Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch It's sheer pleasure watching Muniz work -- seeing him seized by mad impulses of delight. Stephen Cole-Globe and Mail "Waste Land" is a testament that things can go from good to bad in an instant. But they can also improve just as quickly. Stephanie Merry-Washington Post It's not a very good title, Waste Land - this isn't a bleak film, at all - but just about everything else in Lucy Walker's documentary works, and illuminates. Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer This conversion of garbage into humanitarian aid is just the beginning. Practical charity gives way to life-changing intimacy. Jeffrey Overstreet-Image The breadth of gratitude these catadores feel towards Muniz and the life-experience they undertake makes for an intelligent, emotional movie. Simon Foster-sbs.com.au Waste Land is a real treasure, the sort of heartwarming and life affirming study of people, lacking in both sentimentality and cynicism, that uplifts the audience and elevates the art form Dan Jardine-Cinemania Waste Land fuses the design concepts behind two of the most high-profile animations of recent years, Rio and the Oscar-winning Wall-E, into an essay about how hard some people are prepared to work. Graham Young-Birmingham Post The result is a film that works on multiple levels, casting light on a worldwide problem while delivering a big jolt of human hope. Robert W. Butler-Kansas City Star Muniz is a gifted, modest and altogether delightful man, and his project is both aesthetically fascinating and philosophically stimulating. Philip French-Guardian [UK] It's inspiring, humbling and beautifully made. Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express A well-made and often uplifting film that refuses to get angry yet still manages to point out that things aren't as they should be for a great many. Derek Malcolm-This is London More self-conscious, subtle exploration than the dubious bleeding-heart PR stunt implied by its premise. Sophie Ivan-Film4 Well made and impressively structured, this is a heartwarming, genuinely inspirational and ultimately deeply moving film that has deservedly picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. Matthew Turner-ViewLondon The glimpses of favela life will make you thank your lucky stars you weren't born there. Anthony Quinn-Independent Perhaps not life-changing but certainly life-affirming. Jason Goodyer-Little White Lies This is undoubtedly a bold raid into an unknown territory - both geographic and conceptual - that the prosperous classes prefer not to think about. Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK] Walker finds inspiration and strange beauty in the squalor. Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph As in her memorable Blindsight, in which sightless climbers took on Everest, Walker celebrates the indomitability of the human spirit. Nigel Andrews-Financial Times A remarkable testament to working class lives and the unifying power of art, Waste Land is a rare thing - a film that makes you proud to be human. Elliott Noble-Sky Movies Compelling and vivid, it's another fine piece of work from an up-and-coming talent. Nev Pierce-Empire Magazine A reminder of humanity's ability to transcend its surroundings through art or just plain optimism. Matt Glasby-Total Film Walker's documentary is moving, life-affirming and challenges what you think you might know about these people who pick through the rubbish. Amber Wilkinson-Eye for Film

Frankenstein's Army Movie Review:
You've seen found footage horror and Nazi zombies before, but Frankenstein's Army mashes them together in a way that breathes new life into tired genre conventions. Henry Northmore-The List Like the monster evoked by the film's title, everything feels tacked together. Amber Wilkinson-Eye for Film Where Frankenstein's Army really shines is with the stunning designs and monster make-up, with the film delivering old-style lumbering monsters without resorting to CGI.
